I suspect the constant nagging of “when oh when will you be playing a show?” must have taken a toll on Magic Weapon’s Jordan Robson Cramer and finally, he caved and what a treat it was!
The night’s lineup was somewhat questionable, or rather… varied. I think the best way to look at this would be in mineral terms. The first band, Halifax’ Vikings, were kind of like a rock. A very unrefined rock that’s very sharp. Magic Weapon, were a gem, very shiny, fit-for-a-jewel kind of gem. The last band was a bit like a pebble. An oval pebble you might find on the beach of lake Superior, so if you were to try to skip it on the lake’s surface, it would kind of go “plop!” and sink down like the bad-ass pebble it is, that doesn’t feel like conforming to a happy kid’s pebble-skipping. Oh boy, lets move on.
If geology is not your thing, and it obviously isn’t mine, here’s a clearer representation. Vikings were a very loud, very intense post hardcore band. Their set was short but pretty much filled to saturation.
The majority of the crowd had been waiting and greatly anticipating (or maybe that was just me) the premiere of Magic Weapon, who’s 6 song E.P. was released this fall. No songs from the E.P. were actually played, but rather a couple of songs that had been written in the couple of weeks prior to the show. Sunset Rubdown’s Jordan Robson Cramer was joined by Matt Shane from Think about Life on the drums who managed to keep his shirt on for a total of one song, which some seemed to think was too much, being used to his topless drum-playing. The original “member” of this very abstract, works-through-collaboration kind of band, Mathieu Malouf did not perform and neither did Shapes and Sizes’ Rory Seydel who was supposed to join them on guitar, but the two of them pulled it off with a set we wish had never ended.
Germans describe themselves as an Indie / Gothic / Pop band, and if you can somehow marinate how that would work together, it sounds fairly accurate.
While this is not related to the show in any way, apart from the fact it will be held at the same place, make sure you make your way to Friendship Cove this Saturday for the Assembly screening. It’s going to be hot hot hot!
