What to Blog on Indyish

by Risa Dickens

Here are 3 general categories of what we’re looking for in writing for Indyish… in case you were wondering.

1. Projects.

Give insight into the projects you’re involved in, or other projects you think are interesting, esp those involving indie artists. Any size project is cool to blog about - from collaboration on a single song, to the redesign of public transit in a city… and everything in between. How, Why, do people come together to make things, especially art? What gets made? Who’s involved? What processes work, what doesn’t work, and how can that knowledge be useful to others? (Thanks to Serah-Marie McMahon from Worn for suggesting we focus on projects… check out her bag project here!)

2. Products.

Blog about what you’ve made when you put it up for sale. When you post your ep, or say some tshirts you designed, or anything else you might want to sell - think of those as blog posts too. Writing something to accompany the product will make it easier for the search enginges to index your work (search bots need keywords for context, images alone don’t mean much to them) and it’ll also make it more fun for visitors. You can also post about other people’s products, by way of introducing Indyish to them. Feel free to link to other places where a product can be purchased - we’re not competitive about stuff like that.

3. Promote!

Anything happening here in Montreal or anywhere in the world you think people should know more about? you have a show coming up? your friend has a vernissage? There’s a website or festival somewhere you think is useful or cool? give us a quick heads up! You can post press releases if you like, just try to add a short intro in your own voice.

Style tip: To add style to blog posts, like Big and Blue, for example, check out the “custom styles” on the member tools page for a list of our styles and a quick breakdown on how to use the CSS.

All posts should contain: a few links, an image or audio or video. They should be under 750 words. 250 is actually ideal for human eyes on the computer, and people do like to read things in series, so think about breaking long posts up in ways that build anticipation, like those old serial novels, if that works for you.

Remember, these are just suggested bloggin’ guidelines. What you post on Indyish is up to you!
