The web is pretty big, you might have noticed, and the code behind it that makes some sites more visible then others can be endlessly complex. This is why we made Indyish - to offer artists one space where they could easily collaborate with others to build visibility and following. One free space that we could pour our programming and promoting efforts into for the good of everyone who wanted to participate, and where they could contribute their independent efforts in turn.
If you are a member of Indyish, I guarantee we would love to see and hear more from you around the site! I said this in an email to a new member the other day and they replied something to the effect of ‘great! what can we do so you see more of us?‘ Here is an answer to that oh so delicious question, in blog form!
1. You could do a daily or weekly jam (or How To, or Deep Thought, or??) on the Indyish video site. The easiest way is if you have a camera on your computer, just go to Indyish Video, click to submit a new video, and choose the record option. It should detect your camera and ask you to proceed, and you’ll have to click Yes and Record and Save once you’re done; but then tadah, your video will be on Indyish and you can embed it and put it in a blog post or anywhere else on the web! You can also post videos to your own Youtube channell, and then just share the link on Indyish Video - possibly even easier. Either way, your new video will appear on the front page of Indyish shortly after you you post it.
2. If you have access to any kind of audio recording (even crud quality) you could do a podcast show where you introduce us to other acts you like, or feature songs of your own. Or you could just post a different song on the podcast every day, chosen from the heaps of free music out there. Anything posted on the podcast streams on the front page of the site!
3. You could blog about gigs you do, or about other gigs you go see, or share links to other cool sites around the web.
4. You could post different products for sale, even digital products…
5. You could start your own blog column, like every Friday you promote some shows going on over the weekend, or every Tuesday you blog a different designer you like, or feature a different zine. All new blogs appear on the front page as well.
Anything you do on the site brings your profile back up to the top and increases your visibility. Using the site in a regular way (weekly daily) to do something interesting like a show or column would be the thing most likely to get attention from your peers and even press. Heck, if you were doing something like that and it was awesome we would probably help you get press!! We get a lot of traffic from the US, Canada (Montreal!) and around the world on Indyish and the whole point is to build an audience together that is interested in what you’ve got to show them, so go for it. We support your independent ideas and attempts, and look forward to seeing more of you!!
And one last note, on copyright : Items posted on Indyish start with a Creative Commons, open source-y license, unless you indicate otherwise somewhere on your post or profile (which you can update at any time.) The license we chose allows people to put our content on their sites or in their zines or whatever so long as they properly attribute the work to its creator. We believe that this helps us gain visibility and increases our goodwill quotient with other makers out there, but if you want to choose a different license for your work, or just indicate “all rights reserved,” don’t hesitate, that’s totally cool with us as well! And finally, for real this time, don’t hesitate to let us know your thoughts on all this. We’re a young site, trying to figure out the best way to do things and we always appreciate your input.
