Toronto Fringe Review - We is Blunderstruck!

by lacy tracy

We Is Blunderstruck! begins in a refreshingly low-tech manner with a technician pressing play on a cassette-tape player with a mic pointed at the speaker. Blunderstruck is a band of three hard-rocking clowns whose shy uncertainty and DIY attitude make them incredibly endearing. Comparisons with the Fringe’s other clown-rock band, Die Roten Punkte, are inevitable, but the two are both brilliant for very different reasons. While DRP remain endearing throughout (and because of) their bickering and jealousy, Blunderstruck present a quieter, more cautious group of red-nosed rock ‘n rollers. They are quiet and cautious for good reason, though, as their band has found themselves playing at the funeral of a fan of theirs. This setup is the source for much of the awkwardly amusing payoff that follows, as attempts at sticking to tradition clash with tunes like “Hells Bells” that have been slightly altered to reflect upon the life of the deceased. We Is Blunderstruck offers up humble, unassuming clowning with an amazing soundtrack. Definitely worth checking out.
