Thursday Afternoon Beer Tent Music Lineup

by alanah

After getting completely wrapped up in the Fringe last weekend, it was particularly painful to emerge from the poster-slathered cocoon of the beer tent and spend the last 3 days at work. I’m extra relieved to get back to my 11-5 info-booth post and I’m excited about the FREE OUTDOOR MUSIC which will keep me company through the afternoon. Here the lineup, with links in case you prefer your music via myspace, or you are stuck at the office dreamin of the Fringe:

1pm Peter Panic
2pm Ben Spencer’s funeral
3pm Subcollisions
4pm Speakerton
5pm The Winks

The Winks (photo by Jessica Eaton)The only band there I actually know is the Subcollisions and I can’t go on enough about their “Pint slammin’ Cabaret Franglais.” (i have already gone on about it here). I am really digging this trend towards sprawling bands that feature accordions and other weird instruments (uglystick anyone?). The Winks (pictured above) also look like a rollicking good time.
.

The evening bands booked by Pop Montreal include Synthetic Folk Hero, Whip Cream featuring Michael Johnny and Flames!

Inevitably some indie-rock nerd will stops by the infobooth during the afternoon, read the Pop Montreal lineup and his eyes will start bulging out behind their black plastic glasses and he’ll awkwardly say something like “ohmygod. these guys are playing here? for free? These guys are like the best band EVAH.” And I smile and nod quietly memorize the band name so that some day when they go all Arcade-Fire on us, I can be all blasé about how I saw them way back when they were just kids on the streets of Montreal…
