Bloggin live from Osheaga here - I’m definitely the only nerd who brought their laptop to the fest. Just in case you were thinking of doing this: don’t. There are 10 computers hooked up to the “nets” right here on site because those in the know know that people cannot be expected to sever themselves from the net for days at a time, even if those days are packed with not-to-be missed bands.

The main “river” and “mountain” stages look and feels a little like a sand storm, the keyboard I’m typing on is already covered in a fine layer of dirt, and I can already anticipate the choking feeling of mashing up to see the Smashing Pumpkins in this mess after a day’s worth of dancing has stirred up the dust. The MEG and tree stages are an oasis in comparison, with actual shade in sight, and fortunately that’s where Thunderheist was playing. Although the fact that I’m sweating just standing around today isn’t very conducive to dancing, but it was perfect to set the atmosphere for a back-yard birthday party for DJ Graham’s mom, who was apparently seeing her son perform for the first time.
“What do you think of the show, Mom?”
“It’s nice.”
Thunderheist is fundamentally nighttime music - as indicated by lyrics like “We are the after-party” - “it’s 2 in the afternoon,” interrupted Graham from the turntables. But the sun is no match for MC Isis. She had all the hipsters in the crowd dancing on stage like it was the get seen party of the year. Note to adorable girls dancing on stage with a band that you idolize: put away your camera, stop adjusting your neon sunglasses, this isn’t a photo op; this is your life.
