Things to do in Montreal when you’re supposed to be in Halifax: Sarah Mangle show tonight

by Tessa Smith

All summer I’ve been planning to visit Halifax in August to check in with my family and have coffee with my high school buds. But the dates keep getting pushed back to the point where friends here in Montreal don’t believe that I’m actually ever going to leave the city. It’s awkward because I’ve already let myself down about a bunch of things happening this week that I knew I’d miss. I had gone through the grieving process and come out the other side: Daft Punk, SebAstiAn last night, Receivers tonight, the Luyas CD release on Friday, the Bollywood Bike-In at St-Henri’s Mc Auslan Brewery…. It’s fine, I’m over it.

I had accepted not being able to go to these events and now I feel silly spending a week at home watching Italian horror films from the 70s because I can’t leave Montreal but I can’t go out. I had also expected to take a bunch of work to Halifax with me and now I’m still working from my office (read: futon cum desk in my white-walled bedroom) with a weird feeling of being in motivationless limbo.

For those of us (reluctantly) still in town tonight, besides the Receivers show (which I hope you’ll also go to), Sarah Mangle is playing at Bar St. Laurent II. Fellow blog editor, Alanah says Sarah is a wonderful drawrer, and I do believe that Sarah almost illustrated for the first Assembly. I’m interested to see her play, as I’ve seen her name on lots of posters around town. She’s got a myspace if you wanna get a feel for her style. And here’s the info on the show as passed along from Sarah:

Wet Nose Hero (Thats me and the string quartet)
are sharing the stage with Warriorette, the Fo!ops and The Bloody Marys

at Bar St. Laurent
(corner of St. Laurent and St. Viateur)
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8

its 4 bucks at the door.
and we finally have cds and cassettes to sell.
so come, sing along and hang out!
i would love to see you there!

Sounds lovely. Come to think of it, I rarely go to this sort of show in Montreal, while I used to do folky stuff all the time in Halifax. So maybe this will realign my inter-city status just long enough to tide me over till I can get out of here.
