The story of how I met Indyish folks.

by Marilis Cardinal

So I’ve been an intern at Indyish for almost two months now, and it has been a really interesting experience so far. I initially approached Risa after seeing something about how she was looking for a marketing intern and I was intrigued because I checked out the website now and again and it just seemed like something fun to do with my time! In the email, I mentioned how I knew nothing/had never done anything regarding marketing and somehow, I got the gig anyway. I must come off as very charming in emails! We agreed I would attend local events and abuse of my newly purchased camera and blog about it (hence all those concert blogs I’ve been doing).

So far, I’ve yet to meet most of the Indyish staff and collaborators, but the four I’ve managed to meet were all in very memorable, “Indyish” situations.

Risa was the one who suggested I blog about the meeting with Tessa, the first person I met “in the flesh” through the website. Initially we were supposed to meet at the Neil Young Tribute, but there were conflicts and we ended up just keeping in contact through cellular phone airwaves. Tessa was downtown at the time, and I was at Boa with friends when we finally crossed paths at 2AM, at the first night of Vintage Violence, Andrew Rose/Parklife’s monthly DJ nights at Green Room. Très Indyish non?

After almost a month of practically daily email exchange, Risa and I finally made plans to meet. While at first, we had agreed to meet for drinks somewhere in Mile-End with promises of a free jukebox, we redirected over to Tristan’s (Indyish’s zoologist/photographer/filmmaker) who was having a open-house/get-together/photo session. I got a sneak preview of one of the films that will be shown at The Assembly and discovered Tristan and I both had a little something for Ray Lamontagne.

Then, this Friday, at the Art Matters launch, as I was sitting on the stairs of Le National, very concentrated on the settings of my camera, I turn around and notice there was someone sitting next to me. He said something along the lines of ”Hey! I think we write for the same website!”. It was Jonathan. Through small talk and discussions about The Assembly, (such a hot topic!) it’s been decided: the boy is good people.

Look forward to meeting more of you good people at the Screening on Saturday! Come say hey!! I’ll be the small girl with a big camera.

  2. Tessa Smith proclaims with a mighty roar:

it seems that all the best indyish interns have gotten in by responding to that marketing ad and then determinedly proving that a lack of marketing skills is not in fact a failing.

really nice work so far with the photos and behind the scenes administrative stuff. go intern go!
