After such a bangin’ birthday mess, we’re all really excited about this upcoming monthly mess happening for the second time at Main Hall. We’ve halted the usual traveling mess and settled down for an extra month as a sign of solidarity. To celebrate (or console) the Indyishers who are returning to school, we’re having a back to school party with the usual mix and match of different forms of expression. If you’re familiar with the mess, you know the drill!
Another particularly exciting new idea we’re trying out is the pre-mess. Kind of like a meet and greet, mix and mingle, 5 a 7 down at Green Room. The monthly mess is usually (well… always) so action-filled that there is very little time left for conversations, so we created the pre-mess for just that! There’ll be food there and at the mess from Afro-Bites and we’ll be doing the Osheaga raffle. For a chance at winning some tickets, you can also answer one of our daily questions. The latest one is here.
Here’s the whole sexy lineup as far as we know (tends to flux a bit.. it is a Mess after all, and Monthly no less.)
HOST: DeAnne Smith - Comedian.
- Animal Consciousness by Valerie Boxer (short film)
- Coward and the Pelican (music) are one of my favorite bands right now. They’re unbelievably talented, young and make me feel uncomfortably inadequate for not playing an instrument.
- Mlle Mille Feuilles (Baroque dance) with Stanislas Saint-Germain on baroque guitar.
“Searching for the glimmering of a new music, searching for a music rooted in the past, yet open on a peaceful future, Stanislas is pursuing an ancient plucked instrument tradition. With his lutes, theorbo and baroque guitar he makes these ancient sounds at home in today’s world, hoping that they will resonate in people’s hearts.”
- Professor Matt Soar, presentation on interactive narrative, new Korasakow film about signage in Montreal; with folk soul improvisations by OK Giraffe (music)
Matt Soar teaches intermedia production in the department of communication studies at concordia university. Logo Cities, his recent symposium on signs and lettering, involved locating and exhibiting the Simcha, Warshaw, and Tavern signs, and hosting the Québec premiere of Helvetica, a film about a font. Matt has just completed his first database documentary, titled Almost Architecture.
- Alison Louder (spoken word). You might remember Alison as one of the artists that did some live painting at the last mess and stuck around for some improvised jammin’ post-mess.
- Is that the Sound of my Voice? (music) who may or may not be joined by Les Tabarnak d’Epoques’ Aleks Schürmer. Again, that’s one of the surprises that we’ll probably find out about a few hours before the show.
- Professor Rae Staeseson (short performance art films with introductions)
Rae Staseson is an intermedia artist, working in a variety of electronic, digital and live forms. Her videos have been exhibited at such venues as The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), Carillo Gil Museum (Mexico City), Goethe Institute (Montréal), The Knitting Factory (New York City) and the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland. Staseson has had recent screenings at the Jersey City Art Museum, Dalhousie Art Gallery (Halifax), the New Forms Festival (Vancouver) and at the Images Festival (Toronto) and the Onion City Festival (Chicago).
- Receivers(music): receivers is the brainchild of Joseph Donovan, ex-member of marlowe and the dears, and producer of Montreal darlings the Sam Roberts Band, the dears and the High Dials. Simple but intricate layers of bass, drums, guitars, vocals and keys create a moody, sometimes catchy, sometimes melancholy tone that is reminiscent of something you can’t quite put your finger on, but kind of sounds like the future…
- Timothy Zhao / VJ Sakara (VJ). I actually just found out what exactly a VJ is after a email exchange with Risa. Oh boy. Now that I know, I am so very very excited. This should be incredibly interesting. Also, if you’re one of the confused one, here is what wikipedia has to say.
heya - heads up- bc people have emailed me to ask: the mess is a “pay what you can” event and no one is turned away. ok? see you soon! r
