One of my favourite things, going to shows, is to head out looking forward to hearing the band I initially went to see, and then discovering other bands in the process. Well that more than happened this Tuesday. I went out to the Divan Orange, excited about seeing Sister Suvi, and walked out infatuated with the two other bands as well.
The first band to get up were the Get Sets, a cute cute cute trio that ”are influenced by peer pressure and violence on tv.” You take one look at them and lend your ear for a second or two of their set, and you’ll realize that really, they are just a lovely happy band with catchy hooks.
In between the sets, I went around the back of the stage to make a phone call and passed by a man, sitting on a stool, who was wearing possibly the most frightening mask in the world, sitting the darkness. I walked on by, pretending I wasn’t fazed and that it happens to me all the time, while I was secretly dying on the inside. Turns out it was the drummer for the not at all frightening Luyas. In fact, I instantly developed a crush for each of the members within very few minutes into the set. Luckily, my camera is a good alibi for getting right up to the stage, where I worked past my fear of the mask and managed to regain a regular heartbeat. In true Montreal-band style, the band was composed of members/former members/collaborators of other bands such as Bell Orchestre, Arcade Fire, SS Cardiacs and Torngat; musical multi-tasking at its best.
Last but not least, probably one of my favourite bands, not because they are musically talented in any way, only because they are pleasant to look at (I kid, although they are quite hot), Sister Suvi. They were, as always absolutely delightful. I’ve listened to their E.P. an obsessive amount of times and I always get a kind of thrill from seeing them perform it live. If you happen to be in the US of A in late April, check out their myspace for tour dates: http://www.myspace.com/sistersuvi.
i liked this show, the getsets really won me over with their sloppy charm
