The difference between a homeless person and a person in the industry

by emma

Hallo all!

I’m Emma. Not quite sure how I ended up here. I invited Tristan to a show I was promoting and hosting about a month ago, then he blogged about it here and all of a sudden, I’m part of the Assembly 2.0 team.

Not that I’m complaining. It’s quite nice around these parts, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be involved in this project. What I’ll be doing is managing the musician-types who come around to make some music for the plays. Not just anyone can manage musicians, you know.

So that’s where I come in… days shy of 18 years old, obsessed with music, redhead. Been promoting indie types since 14. It all started with, admittedly, the first season of Canadian Idol. A friend I met online in a fan forum thing (I mentioned I was 14, right?) came to Montreal to visit in February ‘04. My mom said it was OK, don’t worry. Anyway, Friend happened to be visiting when Folk Alliance was on its every-four-years-lets-go-to-Canada thing, and it was being held at the Hyatt in Montreal. I thought it was going to be lame, but Lindy was playing for 20 minutes one day so we went to check it out for the entire weekend. I am big on logic, as you can tell. There I met Richard Flohil; one of the most interesting characters I have ever come across. He gave us passes for the “Sweet Beaver Suite”… and it was at that moment that my musical life started.

“The difference between a homeless person and a person in the industry,” he told me, “is a laminate.”

Classic.

So that’s it. I was welcomed with open arms by a 72 year old man into the music industry. How could I resist? I leapt in and never looked back. Since then, I have been living by music. I have had some experiences. I know my way around these indie music parts.

Anyway. That’s my story. Expect to hear a lot about Peter Katz and Rob Szabo from my end. I won’t link to them just yet because you’ll get tired of me doing that.

It’s nice to be writing in a blog that people actually read. Looking forward to more of this here chatter.
