The 100-Sided-Die Hosts an Open House + Sale this Saturday.

by Kirsten McCrea

The 100-Sided-Die, a multi-purpose collective studio space in Montreal’s Mile-End, is opening their doors this Saturday to the public.  Created in 2004, the Die has been home to some big Montreal talent: it is the former jam space of Wolf Parade, current home to AIDS Wolf, houses the studio space of renowned screenprint duo Seripop, and formerly housed talent such highly unique tattooist Emilie Roby and zine-maker extraordinaire Owen Plummer.

The Die is currently home to some 23 artists, screenprinters, musicians and weirdos.  This is a great chance to not only browse new work by a large collection of Montreal artists, but also peek into what a functioning artist studio space looks like.  The artists are looking forward to Saturday as a day to meet some new people, maybe sell a few prints, and answer all your art and non-art related questions.

There are a few other great collective studio spaces in Montreal, such as The Long Haul and the Belgo building.  I’m unaware of any, however, that have such a large number of artists all working in what is essentially one big room.  For a good collection of recent photos, check out Alice Phieu’s tour at www.phieuthelookingglass.com Want to read a pretty in-depth and very recent report on art collectives in Montreal?  Check out Aaron Vansintja’s article, “Where the artists are”, from the McGill daily.

In the meantime, head to the 100-Sided-Die this Saturday.

When : Saturday November 28th from 1pm – 6pm

Where : 100 Sided Die 5334 De Gaspe , 12th floor , room 1202. (Close to Laurier metro station or St. Laurent bus)
