Fringe Review: Hanging by a Branch

Hanging by a Branch is probably the most positive, uplifting show at the Fringe this year. It’s a charming dose of magic, environmental awareness, and the art of storytelling. Yes, I said “environmental awareness” — but don’t worry, you won’t be hit over the head with any political messages. You’ll just have a great time and leave with a concentrated appreciation of nature’s infinite wisdom.

MUTEK2008: Thursday, May 29th

Well, at least the indoor events were a guaranteed good time!
Certainly the worst weather for a MUTEK in recent memory, this year’s fest was still up to the same standards as previous years in other ways.
Panel 1: When Promotion Becomes Distribution
Starting halfway through the first panel, entitled When Promotion Becomes Distribution, there were a few […]

Ode To Green Packaging

I was very pleased last year when I went to a product management meeting at Sony BMG Canada with MC Mario (yes, I work with MC Mario, he’s actually pretty cool) where the product reps revealed a new digipak entirely made of potato starch, meaning you can actually stick it in your compost bin when […]

Arborescence RED: Annie Briard’s snapshots of our relationship to the environment

Briard chose red as one of themes of the exhibit and a medium for her work because of its intense emotional connotations. You don’t see a lot of red and walk away without feeling something, she says, summing up her goal for Arborescence RED at the same time.

Art in the dark — Have fun with Earth Hour!

Do you know what you’re doing at 8pm tonight (your local time)? Hopefully, your immediate answer is “I’m turning off the lights!”
If you’re already confused, here’s a little background on Earth Hour. For one hour on 28 March, at 8pm local time around the world (yes, I realize this has already happened in some places!), […]

Toronto-Montreal Rideshares and Vegetable-oil Fueled vehicles

Friday morning, I checked Craigslist for a car pool link that could lead me to a stranger that would kindly drive me home that evening for a small sum of money (25$ in this case). I dragged my lazy sleep-deprived body to a metro station after a 3 hour long lazy breakfast and met up […]

Thoughts and Pictures from the Dress Mess

Our Indyish Monthly Mess remains messy, and is especially tricksy when we convert a non-venue into a venue for one night, but it always seems to manage a magic, diversity and glow that I love in it’s every manifestation.
This month, Feb 29 2008, we returned to the private loft Studio 300 for some class, […]

Call for Artists - DARE-DARE Gala Unplugged

Everyone’s favourite under-the-bridge artists’ collective, DARE-DARE is seeking submissions of /unplugged/ art for their springtime gala. Preparation for the age of post-petrol creativity? Or adapted for a clandestine performance venue?
Shoddily translated from their Facebook invite (en francais):

The DARE-DARE folks are putting together the 4th edition of their fundraiser Gala, a festive evening that will take […]

The (continuing) Story of Stuff

Just passing along a video I found recently and thought was interesting. It’s the sort of thing you might have forwarded to you from your mother’s white-haired socialist friend. Or hear about from the kids you babysit after their young and idealistic homeroom teacher made them watch it in class. I came across it while […]
