Night before last I did not sleep a wink, I was running over and over in my mind the details for the show the next day, the Sun Ra Arkestra coming into town, this vision we had hatched was going to be good and real if we could pull it all off, pull it all together, get all the instruments and gear they needed, treat them right, get them a crowd, coordinate a collaboration between them and the Ethereal Tribal Dancers, keep the rest of the show on time, properly mic 15 experimental big band musicians, and keep ourselves calm, sweet, helpful, happy and fingers crossed.
Last night I slept like a baby. This video does no justice to the beautiful music or the show, but I grabbed my computer and shot the brief web cam window anyway, to be able to give you a quick taste, then I put it away to join the parade!
I really suggest you try to get tickets to their show tonight at Sala Rosa. They are here for the Suoni per il Popolo Festival, and wheras yesterday’s jam at the Indyish Mess at the Fringe was a unique experience to get on stage and play with these legends (1 member I was chatting with yesterday about our parents mentionned gently that he got to send a car for him mom to come see him when he started to play with Kool and the Gang. Talking with 2 of the younger members late last night I asked if they played with other bands, and the keyboardist quietly defferred, but the drummer spoke up and poked him and said - this guy played with Winton Marsalis band!) tonight’s show will be a much better chance for a detailed appreciation of their wildly beautiful skills and sounds.

I am so sorry I had to miss this; I searched everywhere for a transmolecular isotope teleportion device, but alas, no, I was stuck here, 400 miles from this Close Encounter :(
Should any further video surface of this amazing thing you did here, please, please post. Future generations will want to know about this event, about The Day We Made Contact.

Aw man - mrG - all the Saturnites were there in spirit! We taped the whole thing, we had 2 cameras running thanks to a partnership we made with the local university community television project, CUTV, now it’s just a question of getting it captured and edited together. I hope the audio comes out ok, unfortunately we weren’t be able to get audio recorded directly from the soundboard because the output on it just wasn’t designed for it and gave us a bad buzz when we tried. We had small directional mics on the cameras, hopefully it’s all ok.. Right now the indyish mess video is produced by volunteers so it can take a while. But I’ve been asking around for other video from folks who were there, and we did rescuse some amazing photos today, and I want to sit down and write out all my stories from the day, because every moment we had with the Arkestra was pretty amazing.
