For the 15th year, Tangente has opened its new season with Extracurricular Dances, a program of short pieces by recent graduates of Montreal dance schools. Of course the works are a tad uneven, but overall there is plenty of good stuff to make it worth the price of admission. Two works especially stood out for me. So often, solo works are a dangerous endeavour (watching and performing dance are such different experiences), but Concordia graduate Julia Male has a knack for crafting solos that display a distinct corporality and for creating singular experiences. After the success of Les cuisses à l’écart DU COEUR, UQAM’s Virginie Brunelle retaliates with Foutrement, only confirming that she is a choreographer who deserves our attention. Her work once again manages to be detached, yet full of anguish; cold, yet cathartic.
There are three more shows left if you want to catch Extracurricular Dances: today, Saturday, September 27 at 4pm and 7:30pm, and tomorrow, Sunday, September 28 at 4pm. Regular tickets are 17$, 13$ for students. For more information, call 514.525.1500 or visit www.tangente.qc.ca
