blogging from the ‘salon de musique independent‘ in the quasi-industrial vibe of the ‘just for laughs studio’ (st laurent just south of sherbrooke) now that they’ve slipped us the password for wifi. huzzah!

we heard Lil Andy’s song ’sweet auburn’ about 4 times this morning which made me wish they’d open the bar already (11am is not too early to lay a base, c’mon!) but now we’ve got more of a mix goin, musically anyway. it’s 1pm. the salon opened at 10am and it’s pretty much been us at the tables talking to each other, which is of course mostly why we come. the most interesting conversations so far have all touched on the difficulties unique to our lil scene here ie;
language. for the most part actually it’s been french language groups looking to broaden their horizons and make links with the indie crowds in angloland. in this area, indyish may actually be able to help, so i’m having a good time so far. it helps that i’m sitting in the row behind Dave Cool and can throw stuff at him.
i’d say there are about 60 tables, so it’s definitely more on the cozy side then the cavernous. it’s cold. the tables are populated by
indie lables (or anti-lables in Dave’s case) plus promoters, bookers, distributors, internet radio stations, and consultants of different kinds. people around me are comparing prices for cd cases and poster design and how to get grants.ah.. must network now! more soon!
ps- Want to meet these people and check out this Quebec indie scene? I got a free pair of tickets for the first commenter to tomorrow’s gala show for the Quebec Independent Music Awards.. Check out the performers here and then just comment on this post if you’re interested and if you’re the first commenter, congrats you win! Come find me here tomorrow between 10-6 to pick up your tickets. You can see Socalled and Bonjour Brumaire and Chcolat and Tricot Machine and the United Steel Workers and others tomorrow, and try and spot the nominated stars like Arcade Fire.
umm, world? read the last paragraph of risa’s post again. you must comment to win, and maybe on the second read you’ll realize how good a win this is! c’mon, you know you love scanning crowds for award nominees…
fun things can happen, like this: the last time i was at the MMVAs in toronto was the year of the much-publicized plumber’s butt à la avril. hilarity ensues. then i got some beer from a band i am ashamed to mention, so i won’t, despite the beer.
///not commenting to win so much as commenting to provoke comments!

OK, I have to admit, I’m pretty disappointed you didn’t actually throw anything at me, but you did draw me a couple of nice pictures which are now on my fridge at home, as promised.
Good times this weekend with the Indyish crew, always fun to hang out and chat :)
Cheers,
Dave
