Shameless Pop Reference: Chapter 2. “The Path to Eternal Bliss,” or “Spice Girls”

by sarah pearson

So here’s the story from A to Z: I’ve got the summer vacay blues, stuck in a two week down-period between one amazing abroad-trip and another out-of-town working holiday, with little to entertain me except….

WANNABE BY THE SPICE GIRLS!!!!

This song is seriously one of the great masterpieces of the past decade. Holy smokes. I dare you to argue with the inexplicable catchiness of its progressing bass-line, its almost guru-like abilities to transcend you into good-moodsville, or the almost supernatural way it makes you want to dance. Scary’s third-verse “freestylin” is so impossible not to sing along to that it has me seriously questioning the very notion of Free Will. And the sing-songy chorus inevitably moves me, every single time, to throw my arms in the air in jubilating dance.

It’s managed to pull even this summer-bluesin’ sistah out of a mid-afternoon funk.

Listen to it, friends. Listen. Heal your souls.
