Review - Scout Niblett, Fall Horsie, The Ghost Bees, Thursday April 24

Scout Niblett

I was glad to see Scout Niblett at Sala Rossa on Thursday in a more intimate setting then previous times I’ve seen her. I got to sit right up close where I was near enough to get scoutniblett-sweated upon. She sings through clenched teeth which I find really entertaining. She’s, like, the only performer I’ve seen who does that. I think alot of people categorize her in that girl-with-a-guitar genre but I think she’s the Bessie Smith of indierock.

Her songs meander about unpredictably and her drummer kicks it and out and she goes from wispful to rockout in dramatic ways not the cheesy quiet quiet LOUD way. The lyrics are really clever and strange and I think probably mostly about interpersonal relationships but they’re pretty open to interpretation which is a good thing. The venue was packed and the audience was appreciative and requests were shouted out.

Fall Horsie

The second opener was Fall Horsie from here; with piano, drums, and viola. It was quirky catchy folk. The love child of Harry Nilson and Sufjan Stevens.

Halifax’s Ghost Bees were the opener and they were comme ci comme ca. Two sisters playing different instruments backed by a viola player. High pitched weird outsider folk.
