Y’know what? Those ancient scientists may have been right with that whole “spontaneous generation” thing. Take this here comedy extravaganza, Christophe & His Superfriends, as an example. Half the comics in this show either just got rid of, or are currently joking about, their hair. The show was great. It can’t be a coincidence! That’s just too much, way too out there.
In other words, men, if you want to be funny, it’s all in the hair (or lack thereof). Unfortunately, you’ll just have to take my word for it, because I still do not own a digital camera and thus have no pictures. Could this be a new era, one in which we retreat to our innate imaginations? C’mon, you can do it!
Okay, imagine this: A show that starts off so perfectly with the Dave Acer dance they just have to repeat the intro. A show with a man called Faisal whose name also includes the word “Butt.” Seeing Rodney Ramsey without his dreads for the first time ever. Hearing about Nick Brazao’s short-short wearing hairy ancestors. Catching this year’s Montreal rep for the Just for Laughs Homegrown Competition, Dan Bingham, before the fest. Christophe Davidson himself, proudly wearing his Dykes of Hazzard t-shirt, in a sparkling white blazer. Or how ’bout a plain ol’ kick-ass comedy show with each act on absolute top of his game?
Or imagine the perfect I-need-a-tape-recorder moment: Christophe’s just killed with a few jokes about cats and cat ladies, hopefully not directed at me, and the group of women beside me exchange these lines…
“Your cat’s pretty nice, isn’t she?”
“Yes, she’s very calm, no midnight crazies.”
“You’re lucky to have such a nice cat.”
They laughed themselves right into ridiculous.
But back to the mic! It’s great to see a show that isn’t just a bunch of great individual comics one after another, but a group that bounces off and complements each other. Kudos to Christophe for sharing his superfriends with us. (Umm, superfriends? It was me who added “kickass” in there, so be my friends too please?)
I don’t really know what goes on in the all-boys green room and I really don’t want to, but as long as I don’t have to know (or imagine!) then they should keep doing it. Clearly it’s a booster!
