Review - All things

by Risa Dickens

Whew! Recovering from an epic Holiday Mess by treking out to scheme with potential sponsors for the coming year is very exciting, exhausting and festive… in the interest of suspense, I’ll just say this: there’s lots brewing for 2008!

Meanwhile, on the homefront, as you may know, we recently kicked off some new features on this here group blog of ours: the Indie.Biz series, and the Venue Stories series of blog posts for Indyish.com. These are open columns held down by regulars but which anyone can contribute to just by blogging and following the formula with the title and tag. Since we’re on a roll with it, we figure might as well bring in the New Year with one more. This time the series is more a formalization of what we’re already doing then a brand new thing: it’s Reviews. Yes, we review local shows, conferences, artwork, etc, and that will continue to happen under this new organizational awesomeness, but we’re also glad to start to feature reviews of film and television, old and new work, indie and industry; generally Indyish opinionated blogging on anything we see. We thought about only reviewing indie things, but then thought better of it - first, because this space is called Indyish ie; it’s as much about the people, art, productive spaces between industry and independent as it is about an ethic of Indie. Also, explaining what’s dry, daft, flat or lacking from commercial work, or alternately, what’s not, can contribute (we hope) to a wider conversation around the healthiest, most sustainable and inspiring ways to make good art.

Holding down this Review column from the Film side of things will be dear Daniel Schachter - a prize winning scriptwriter, short filmmaker,TV producer and, incidentally, a wonderful musician who performed last night as part of the madness that was the Indyish Monthly Mess - watch for pics and more from that show, plus some reviews of classics and things brand new, coming soon!
