Random Review - Be Kind, Rewind

by Risa Dickens

Review Haiku:

Less heartbreak, more joy
then Eternal Sunshine plus,
Rewind has Mos Def.

Be Kind, Rewind, directed by Michel Gondry of Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and lots of lovely Bjork music videos (plus about 200 others,) is post modern joyfultragichopeful American magical realism.

Danny Glover, Fats Waller, VHS, the copyright infringement cops, and the brilliant/simple character played by Mos Def broke my heart and cracked us up and to be honest I pretty much always find Jack Black funny. The sequence of all the movies getting remade, especially when they show with music video camera fluidity how they recreate expensive visual effects, is genius on like 8 levels. Oh, and the story is an uplifting rallying call for communities to create and support independent arts production! Plus it’s sooo pretty. At the end I was clapping, singing Tra la LA! and wishing for life to be like this.

Check out the odd, awesome, Gondry:
