On The Unsettlers:

B.W. Brandes manages to toe the line between funhouse barker and bar room poet

(…)

While the band can certainly make interesting beats by banging on pots, pans, toy pianos and typewriters, I’m more won over by their classical musicianship.

(…)

There are not too many bands that could pull off such bold decisions so well.

On contemporary dance company Wants and Needs:

Wants and Needs [Andrew] Tay and Sasha Kleinplatz, of Piss in the Pool fame, are steeped in the kind of non-traditional presenting that’s representative of a next generation of dance artists forging their own path.

On Hexes and Ohs:

Montreal electropop duo Hexes & Ohs have become quite the Toronto mainstay. Frequenting the Drake Hotel more than any other venue, their punchy beats and clever synth riffs fill the floor every time — whether they’re playing live or the indie DJs du jour are giving their album a spin.

On Ira Lee:

…clearly Ira Lee isn’t your average rapper. After spending 5 years working as an Aboriginal youth services instructor for YMCA Canada, Lee sought, and received, funding from the Canada Council for the Arts and the government of Canada to turn his performance skills and love of hip hop into a series of educational workshops.

(…)

Ira has a wordy, and at times almost spoken wordish flow, but he’s confident and charismatic, so it works. He also has a penchant for saying provocative things about the state of hip hop, and the world in general. However, he does so with a clever wordplay (“My tongue is proverbially in cheek, so pull up your tube socks and pass me a juicebox tout de suite” – Who Got Beep) and, most of the time, a sense of humor, so that keeps him from seeming too fanatical. Simply put, as improbable as it might seem with Ira’s self-deprecating, emo-rap steez, he really does come across as an engaging guy.

On Moe Clark:

Remember her name; you’ll be hearing it later.

- Eleventh Transmission

On Maha:

We sing in as many languages and styles as possible, including electroacoustic music; from Hildegard von Bingen to Hildegard Westerkamp and from Mozart to Madonna. We also are known for guerrilla performances incorporating technology and social commentary.
