I’m not actually as shocked as the many exclamation/interrorgation points in the title might suggest, I did have a little notice that the Indyish POP Mess would be today (since I have been just a little bit involved in putting the whole shebang together.) Nevertheless! It’s exciting and nerve wracking and shocking that the date is here at last. Somehow, though I’ve done this show something like 19 times, the crazyness of POP Montreal ramps the experience up a notch. There’s so much talent in the city all the time that exploding it exponentially by adding a couple hundred shows per night for 5 days raises the bar a tad.
I’m stoked though, we’ve got a crazy show for the audience tonight and I think we’ll have a great crowd if the facebookery is any indication. I’m making one last tweak to the lineup, moving Lorne Hiltser’s short film “The Six Stages of Breakups” to the top of the show where it’ll fit better in the flow then at 10:00 when the music hungry POP crowd would, I anticipate, grow restless watching 10 minutes of subtle humour. Someday we’ll probably start printing programs to hand out at the door of the Mess at which point I’ll probably feel less able to tweak things at the last minute… so I figure I better make good use of my freedom while I can (I can’t tell you how often I use this excuse to keep doing exactly what I want in the odd ways I want to do it. This is the juicy lifeblood of indie if you ask me. Not that you did.) The film will be followed by a short spoken word set with sitar, and the night will keep getting even wilder from there. Hint: Dinosaur masks. Yes.
