Pop Day 2: Slow Six, Paper Cranes, Dishwasher and Magic Weapon

by Marilis Cardinal

Last night was a complete gamble compared to how prepared I had been the night before. My original idea was that I’d head out to Final Fantasy and then figure whatever I could catch after the show but after meeting up with my Victoria friends the Paper Cranes at a pizza place on Prince Arthur, I cabbed all the way to the Ukrainian Federation only to be turned down by the friendly guy at the door; the show was completely sold out. I will let the angry rant courtesy of ms. Louder do the talking:

” Not only trustafarians can get a pass to Pop Montreal. The Pop Pass is a general admission entry into all Pop shows, including all Film Pop, Art Pop, and Puces Pop events. There are a reserved number of spots at all venues for Pop Pass holders, but its first come, first serve, as the spots are limited. Don’t worry, there is so much going on that you can get lucky at other venues.”

Thank you for mentioning that the pop pass is NO GOOD for sold-out shows. I got to Final Fantasy at 7:30 to find out that my pass, supposedly as good as a ticket, was completely useless. My friend wasn’t even let in with a media pass. I didn’t pay $84 to subsequently find out that I also had to buy another $20 ticket to secure my spot at a show. I understand the limited space and I am willing to show up early to the shows I really want to see. Forgive me for assuming that ’sold out’ included the allotted pass-holder entry. Even if it was only 25 or 30 pass-holders allowed in, shouldn’t that have been factored into the sold out-ness of the show?

What really upsets me is that I made a specific point to ask the Pop volunteers when I picked up my wristband about what the ‘limited access’ entailed and what I should expect. They seemed just as confused and unaware as I am, and they just repeated that the space is limited and to get to venues early. Thanks a lot. Very helpful. Way to train your volunteers, Pop mtl.

So far, I’m highly unimpressed and regretful of the decision to buy this pass.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to what I DID get to see with my trusty media pass. Luckily, I wasn’t too upset because the Paper Cranes were playing that night and I was really hoping to be able to go see them. So we took the bus back down to Saphire and caught the band Slow Six that I had never heard before. Man, I’m not even sad to have missed Final Fantasy now! They were absolutely amazing. And they had TWO violins. Oh yeah, that’ll beat Owen Pallett’s ass. They just might have been Torngat as my favourite all men instrumental band, but who knows. Point is, they were great.

Then the Paper Cranes came on and Rebecca and I waltzed along to “I Love You ‘Til My Veins Explode” and enjoyed the great great pop music that they are all about. They’ll be doing another show over at L’Escogriffes on Saturday.

Dishwasher

Since we were in the area, we went by the Portuguese Association where all the Film Pop activity is going down and enjoyed Dishwasher’s performance. It was part play, narrated and accompanied by a film about a poor box man who gets harassed by his boss until he meets a friendly rat that helps him escape. Despite the sound problems and the fact that the light bulb he was using as his only lighting broke before he even started.

Magic Weapon

I headed back out to Coda where I met exactly the same people at the door and we giggled at the 8 stamps that adorn both my wrists. My roommates who were there already let me know I had missed the most amazing set before hand by Mixylodion. Having seen him perform solo at Friendship Cove a little while back, I was so surprised to see that it was about 6 people that were unpacking their gear after that set. Jordan Robson Cramer played the keyboard at lightning speed to the point where his fingers just became little blurs floating over the keys. My original plan was to go over to Club Soda with Tessa for the massive dance party but I decided to walk down to some guy’s apartment with the Paper Cranes and grab their gear before going home for some well deserved sleep.
