Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the snowy afternoon in the bedroom recording studio of Matthew Hiscock, head honcho of Bodega Records. Bodega is the newest Indyish artist, after having played an Indyish Monthly Mess in November at the not-even-officially open yet Griffin Room in the McAuslan center. Matt makes wicked fun beats, plays guitar, keys and bass, and on that Mess day collaborated with beautiful contemporary dancer Amélie Paquette.
Matthew, ie; Bodega is also featured in this month’s Nightlife magazine. He does a great interview, and we joked yesterday about the deep truth behind his quote in the article that “there’s something to be said for putting your balls on the line.”
In the spirit of balls on lines, we slammed out 2 podcast songs in about 5 hours. One is our version of the song Brave Radar blogged about here earlier this week. It’s called Home is Where the Home Studio Is, it’s by Jeff Edwards from Sydney Australia, and he’s offered it up on his site for others to contribute to, open source styles, so we tried our hand at it. The other is a song I wrote, with Elran’s help, and which I play with the Ladies Aux - the all girls old time blue grass jam band. It’s called Bones in the Orchard. I love how it sounds with 10 girls on banjos and mandolins, but had also thought a lot about doing a version with a heavier beat and stripped back vocals. When I sang it for Matt he was inspired to lay down guitar, bass, and beats at a speed that was frankly dazzling, and in under an hour we had this:
