It’s a lovely if kinda crazy track put together by a large number of awesome Canadian musicians including Jason Collett, Sarah Harmer and K-os. I love the message but couldn’t help but crack up at how, I dunno, Canadian it sounds, like everyone’s ideas had equal space at the table and everyone was too polite to say um, is this a little much maybe? Sillyness aside, the song is ok, diversity is awesome, and the “please chose to vote for the planet” message is crucial this time around. We seem to be teetering on the edge of environmental collapse and world war but we DO still have a choice in the matter! Vote this time buddy, vote!

Some Maha Experimental Choir Harmony Pre-Mess

We are getting very excited about the hodge-podge, holla, and huzzah collaborations coming together for our big upcoming Indyish Birthday Mess (Aug 9 2008!) - these days all the buzz for us is between the sizzling, eye-closed and hollaring guitar deamon that is Patrick Krief, the smiling to each other sound machine that are his band, Black Diamond Bay, and the fierce and thunderous-tuneful mavens of the Maha Choir. Ahhh, Maha. I have a video coming soon to give you a good idea as we get closer to the Mess of what this group of 6 to 50 women (depending on the gig) are like in a live environment, but here now, here’s a recorded track…Can you picture these acts playing together? Awwesome. Best Birthday ever. =)

Deep River Decoy Sings “Water of Tyne”

So I created this band a few weeks ago when Alanah said she was organizing a “country”-themed mess. We’re called “Deep River Decoy,” and we jammed all together for the first time this afternoon. Here’s a preview of what you’ll be hearing if you come to the Monthly Mess on Sunday.

The song in the recording is a little-known English folk song called “Water of Tyne,” about a long-distance relationship…two lovers are separated by the Tyne River, and the woman sings, “I cannot get to my love if I would die.”

I’m warning y’all - the sound is kinda weird (although it makes for neat effect). I fiddled with input stuff on my ‘puter a few weeks ago, and now I can’t get the levels back right for this kind of live-off-the-floor stuff - I’m totally baffled by what I did, and have no clue how to fix it (I’ll have to ask our trusty sound-guy James Finnerty). Just turn the volume up on your speakers and forgive the the shifting levels. It’s a good taste of our lovely afternoon jam.

Deep River Decoy is:
Sarah Pearson: lead vocals, keys
Andrea Stuart: cello
Amena Ahmad: vocals
Jesika Starnino: vocals, and maybe guitar for future shows (she’s not on this recording tho :-( )

We’ll be singing a 20-minute set of familiar sing-along-able folk songs and traditionals - we’ll even be passing out lyrics for your sing-along enjoyment!!

We’re celebrating the release of 3 new albums by Postcards, Brave Radar, and Dirty Beaches. This podcast is a preview of the albums, plus some songs by soon-to-be-released Fixture bands and a few tracks by Montreal bands that we just like. For the new releases, we mainly picked songs that aren’t on myspace or haven’t been played elsewhere, so they’ll be nice and fresh, and perhaps enticing? On the other hand, if you don’t know any of the bands or can’t make the show, it’s just a bunch of new music that we like and want to share.
