Pixel Projects punk rock dance show at OFF.T.A. and a shout out to Sylvain

by Tessa Smith

Indyish blogger, Sylvain Verstricht has been covering practically every dance show in Montreal for a year and a half now. He’s reviewed something like 60 dance shows over the course of that time. He also gave us his lists of the Best Short Works of 2007 and the Best Long Works of 2007. So if you wanna know about any dance-related happenings in our fair city, read interviews with leading choreographers, or find out which shows are worth your dishwashing dollars, I would recommend following his blog posts.

Most of Sylvain’s coverage falls under the tag archive for dance reviews, which you can browse through here.

Here’s some info on a great-sounding dance show that Risa passed along to me. If I understand correctly, right now the Festival TransAmeriques (FTA) is happening at venues around town. Meanwhile, the OFF TransAmeriques (OFF.T.A.) is taking place as an after-hours compliment to the festival.

Check out this punk rock/contemporary dance and video performance by Pixel Projects: June 1st (today) at 9:30pm at Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui (3900 rue Saint-Denis). Tickets are $10, and can be reserved by calling 514-282-3900

More info on OFF T.A.

Pixel Projects Trans Am

Pixel Projects is a show case for Contemporary Dance with a Punk Rock feel. Begun at La Sala Rossa, Pixel Projects was one of the first, in a series of independent dance events that have recently appeared in alternative venues all over Montreal. Born from a desire to challenge the formalities surrounding dance performance, and to keep time with Montreal ’s thriving indie music scene, Pixel Projects has successfully brought evocative and funny contemporary dance and video to new audiences since 2003. This year’s installment has found a home in the OFF.T.A. festival, presented at Theatre d’Aujourd’hui which is an after hours gathering place for the TransAmerique festival.

This year’s program Trans Am, takes place June 1st at 9:30 and will showcase original live works by Katie Ward, Thea Patterson, Erin Flynn, Andrew Turner, and Hinda Essadiqi; as well as videos by Ben Phillippi, Pascal Desporais and Aurelie Pedron. While each choreographer possesses a distinct vision and voice, what unites this next generation of Montreal choreographers is a move away from formal abstraction, while treating physical and emotional risk and the ambiguity and the innate imperfections in human experience.

Pixel Projects – Trans Am is a one night chance to see the seven rising stars of Contemporary Dance under the same roof and to drink a beer while you do it!

Pixel Projects Trans Am

  1. Sylvain Verstricht proclaims with a mighty roar:

Wow. That’s a rather comprehensive overview of what I’ve written. Thanks, Tessa.
