Photos: It’s never too late to talk about the X-MESS

by Marilis Cardinal

So I’ve been meaning to blog about probably the craziest mess that I participated in to date, but (insert valid excuse) so here it is now, short and sweet!

I was incredibly happy to have my good friends from the band Sister Suvi (check out some photos from a shoot I did with them in the summer, here) to come play for us, and even more excited when they asked if their Toronto buddies Spiral Beach and Wax Mannequin could join in on all the fun! Sadly, due to the fact that there was going to be a huge storm and that their ride to Montreal had cancelled, they had to back out the day before, but not before we decided that we’d be working together at some point anyways, so it wasn’t a big deal. We were, however short of a few acts now, so we pulled all the stops, sent mass emails to friends and in the end, got the sweet and seemingly up to anything Postcards to close the night, as well as Dan Schachter who brought along his friend Nina Nielsen to play a set.

The lineup of the evening was switched around quite a few times during the evening, believe me, but our bow-tied host Peter Radomski never once lost his cool when I went up to him with a “hey, so turns out these guys aren’t here yet, so this person is going to go on now”. What a sweet guy! He took the time to go around and talk to all of the art market people. Oh man, such good vibes from that show. I’m currently having a bit of an Osheaga moment and I’m a bit feverish and delirious which is probably not the best time to blog, but it had to be done! Point is, putting a show together like the monthly mess can get downright confusing, but being surrounded by people who want to help out and want you to do good is amazing and so heartwarming. From the acts that were booked a long time ago, to the ones who couldn’t make it, to the ones who jumped on the bill when we were looking for some awesome last minute acts, we’re lucky enough to deal with the most caring, creative and positive people and every month, I feel incredibly thankful to get together with this great big community and essentially just have a good time!
