Last Saturday, I dragged my hungover and overworked self over to Casa Del Popolo, eager for warmth, tea and a good show. I got there to see a few friends who were mourning the sold out status of the show, gave hugs all around, walked in to Casa Del Popolo and was surprised to see that every single inch of physical space until maybe a meter of the door seemed to be taken up. While the opening band sounded great, I was only able to see the tip of their hair because, despite the cold, pretty much all of Montreal had shown up and was left to myself to let my eyes wonder to either side of the venue’s walls and enjoy the artwork. I guess that allowed me to really appreciate Papercut’s sound but the warmth and the heavy music soon made me drowsy. Right after their set, I took advantage of my non-smoker status to sneak up to the front of the stage, in fact, I ended up right on the stage, cross-legged and ready to get some shots.
While I didn’t wear my best prom dress, but rather an old hat and a big comfy dress, I was really looking forward to seeing Beach House after playing their newest release on repeat at work for the past month. When the band walked up to the stage in their all-white outfits, after slightly awkwardly pushing through the crowd, I was so ready for good photos, having pre-adjusted my settings, and then they turned off the lights and lit some disco balls, so I sighed, stored my camera away and listened. And just because I’m not content of just listening half the time:
Beach House is still one of my favorite bands and they just proved that getting out of the house on a Saturday night is always a good idea. I played their CD when I got home, and fell asleep content. I also love both covers and Daniel Johnston, so their cover of Some Things Last A Long Time (also available on Devotion) stole my heart, big time.
