Phonopolis Record Store opens on Parc Ave
by Tessa SmithA few great new shops have opened up in the Mile End of Montreal that I think are worth highlighting. And many of them are multi-purpose spaces for community activities or meeting places for artists of all kinds. YAh! The most recent opening is Phonopolis on Parc Ave, just below Saint Viateur. Phonopolis is a record shop that was opened a few weeks ago by Nathan from Shapes and Sizes.
They’ve got a great selection of records: new and old, world and local, indie and otherwise, plus lots of CDs and cheap cassettes.
And they’re stocking posters by local artists, including Tyler Rauman, Quinn Caruana, seripop, as well as tickets for blue skies turn black shows.
Mile End is becoming Little Victoria, what with the opening of Wooden Apples just down the block on Parc, and the seeming influx of Victorians and their bands.
In other local business news, just a month ago Drawn and Quarterly opened their comic and graphic novel store on Bernard ave. So if you’ve been holed up at home or at work for the last little while, I’d recommend taking a stroll around Mile End and checking out some of these new spots. It’s exciting to see the area developing in the direction of a mutually supportive arts community amidst some of the gentrification that’s also taking place.
Phonopolis is located at: 5403A Parc Ave
They’re open Tuesday to Sunday noon-7pm

All these new hidden treasures popping up around town make me really giddy. Maybe I’ll go on a little photo journey on Saturday around the neighbourhood if it’s nice and sunny.

They have a great selection of well-priced music, but what really got me were the beautiful posters from Montreal concerts. This was pretty much the last thing missing from that stretch of Mile End, and I think it fits in perfectly.
