Open Source as Alternative

by Risa Dickens

In the spirit of free tools for our broke selves, I’d like to introduce you to an interesting site: OSALT or Open Source as Alternative. They provide an excellent and dense database of open source software charted against the dominant software choice in each category of application. So for example, I found it by googling “open source alternative final cut.” Not only did Osalt list a few open alternatives that I hadn’t heard of, but it’s completely free of os evangelism in the Final Cut write up. Very soothing. Spend an hour reading through here, following links, and you’ll know more about software in general then you did before I’ll wager - open source and proprietary. As firm believers of the “use what you can to do what you can!” philosophy, this makes us verry verry happy.
