“On Saturday May 17th, Nightwood launch their debut album, the “Big City” CD EP (Grenadine Records) at Casa del Popolo, 4873 St Laurent alongside guests Postcards and Vincat (from BC). Admission to the event is $6 or $10 (including EP). Start time is the proverbial 9pm.”
Last Friday my wife and I were at the Malcolm Bauld CD release launch and she made this interesting comment out of the blue, she said: “I was thinking about how interesting it is that everywhere around the world that people are continually creating music, playing on stages just like this and connecting with audiences”
It got me thinking. There is so much music out there… sure we know this, just look at myspace and the all the bands on tour these days BUT really think about it again, it’s continuous! No matter how big or small your band is, we are just participating in this experience and trying to create something that will connect with our communities.
In the end, this is not much of a revelation but it made me realize how happy I am to be participating and contributing in this art form. Four years ago I walked away from the music label I co-founded because we were far in debt and I was going through some personal matters that I had to sort out. I got the steady “job” for a while to feel secure but slowly but surely music lured me back in… my first transition back was getting hired on at the local circus factory in their music marketing department… my second and full transition back is Nightwood. I simply wanted to play music and here we are a year later on the eve of our CD release. I am having so much fun so I accept it. This is who I am and therefore I will participate.
Thanks to Amber and Erin for inviting me into their lives and their band and thanks to my wonderful supporting wife Laurel who took on the new challenge of becoming a publicist for our release and tour!
I humbly invite you all to our Casa Del Popolo on Sat. May 17th for the launch of our Big City EP CD. It would be an honour to share this experience with you all.
Love,
Eric of Nightwood
p.s. Tour Booking Follow-Up:
Sure enough my friend Andrew was right… for a new band, confirming your bookings two-weeks into your tour was very likely to happen. For the upcoming Nightwood tour, things came together for the booking but for the final two shows, it was a huge struggle… I literally searched EVERYWHERE! Then out of nowhere, three offers happened within the span of two days and we were able to book exactly 9 dates in a row. So if I can offer any advice, please don’t plan a night off… your day off will be the day you can’t get a gig and that will happen. What if it doesn’t happen like in our case? Two friends of mine agreed and one said “nights off suck, it’s boring, there’s no need to have a night off when you’re on tour for a short period of time.” Of course, one is in a bigger touring band so he did appreciate that one night off (and the relaxation of a hotel hot tub) in the midst of long tours… who wouldn’t? Hot tub? Sorry, Amber and Erin, there won’t be maxin’ and relaxin’ on this tour.
Small error Eric asked me to rectify:
“confirming your bookings two-weeks into your tour was very unlikely to happen” should read “very LIKELY to happen”. Sorry.

this post really stuck with me this week, we’re gearing up for summer indyish shows and all the stress of booking can distract from remembering that the whole point of doing this is for the moment of joyful connection during the show when the pieces fall into place (or partial mess) and it’s like you feel a wave go through the room of people remembering to just be alive, hear music, dance, laugh, that we are just participating in a collective experience that’s happening in countless rooms around the world, that the experience is reason enough, that the “high stakes” of the day are as fleeting as this feeling… Your wife is smart =)
