New Years!

by Risa Dickens

You got yer New Years plans all figured out? It’s that time of year again, and it sort of reminds me of end of term at school when all anyone can seem to talk about is how much work they have, only this time the default dazed chat is all about plans.

There are always a lot of fun parties to choose from, and I’ll admit I’m tempted by U Rockaoke, because I do rock! thanks for noticing! but there’s a hint of corporate party orchestration in there that in the end I’ll probably steer clear of for New Years.

I avoid all of those “pay 80 bucks for three floors of dj’s and open bar” too, for similar reasons – the only one on this year’s lists that tempts me is at Club Soda with the “seven open bars and over 20 bartenders (…) supplemented by dancers, drummers and other live performers, as well as a laser light show.” Which sounds like a more riotous, hiphop and boozy version of the party goin down at the Opera where apparently you can:

Expect an open bar from 9–11 p.m., fancy hors d’oeuvres by isensi, the Times Square countdown and champagne at midnight, and an “elegantly tasteful fusion of R&B and house” care of Bruce Cobb. Other entertainers include Bad News Brown, bare-assed trapeze act Carpe Diem, live opera by Cantelli, and Eric (aka Speed), an “electronic house violinist” accompanied by DJ Horg.

(check out descriptions for all these and more on the Mirror round up)

I’m temptedish, and not just because of “bare-assed” I swear, but still- doesn’t do it for me this New Years.

I’m mostly tempted to do what we did last year and the year before- which is sneak out of parties early to make out, then go home and watch movies till late. Now that’s my idea of a good time- though I can guarantee that Andrew Rose‘s party at the Green Room/Main Hall will be, for ten bucks, a perfect sweaty, smashing good time. It’s inexpensive, there’s a MTl pinata and more importantly, the music will be good and the dance floor will be joyful, reckless and flaily. Also, the “to be confirmed” bands will probably be better then at other “to be confirmed” spots, just ’cause dude’s got the mad hook ups.

But when push comes to shove and I’m trying to shove El out the door to a celebration, the only one I’ll have much luck with is the one our ex-roomie Emilie is throwing with a whole gang of other nice folk over at the Domion pub (check out the flyer below, and make myspace friends with the Old Man Bar here). If we do sneak out of a party this year it’ll definitely be this one, thrown by best buds, in the oldest bar in Montreal, where they still sell cheap tall boys AND you can play the slots and eat pig knuckles all night, not to mention you can play “bait the Peel Pub patrons” when you leave. I might bail on the last bits there, because for me this year is not so much about vomit or belligerence any more then it’s about being “elegantly tasteful” or “bare-assed,” but I will enjoy talking about pigs knuckles throughout the night for the funny feeling it gives me inside (nausea? nostalgia?) and you could too.

Which reminds me- what are your plans? What kind of New Years are you feelin this year? Whatever you do do, I hope you kiss someone. And if you kiss someone, and then tell them about the pig’s knuckles you ate right before, then everyone can share in the joyful New Year’s naustalgia, and that’s nice.

yay for making up new words. peace, pigs knuckles and much love in the new year.

Have a great time at emilie’s. Personally, I seem to be experiencing faustalgia which involes looking back longingly on a year full of varying forms of pacts with the devil. what a year.
(I also find myself feeling a bit of bosstalgia, as i fondly remember when risa was my dominating boss lady and i was a mere intern pawn)
