I actually have a copy of “Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing” signed with good wishes from The Atwood herself, which is a prized possession of mine though I didn’t meet her - it was a gift. I read this non-fiction about ‘the craft’ when I’m feeling gripe-y about Writing.
I think I love Atwood’s voice in this book because it combines an almost haughty sharp intellectualism with a dear, subjective, personable woman voice. She’s an author who has been responsible for adding possible options to the realm of things I could grow up to be or sound like as a girl. Anyway - all this to say- we did a reading of a page from Negotiating over at James‘ the other day with James, and Erik from the Demaes, on guitar and it’s up on the podcast: Here. (Alongside a Lickety Split oddcast, hurrah!)

though i’ve spent years with my feelings about margaret atwood remaining as “undecided,” i totally get the signed-book-prized-possession…
i have a hardcover copy of sheila heti’s the middle stories, and she wrote… “dear lise, don’t study creative writing in school! good luck and keep at it!” i tracked her down in high school when we had to do a project on a short story and its author, so i interviewed her in her apartment and drank tea.
