Iain Laurie, Edinburgh-based architect of the Indyish logo identity, has a new comic he emailed me about yesterday called Powwkipsie. So far, it seems a world of melting bubbling dusty talk, exact mirrors of here, and comics inside of comics where comic characters escape.
True to form (check out Iain Laurie Draws Stuff) Powwkipsie is visually beautiful and awful, full of motion then suddenly black, then flashing nightmarish. Laurie is playing with the blog and comic format together to unravel and pace the time in his dark multiverse and it’s funny in a horrid way, like that scene in Pulp Fiction where they accidentally shoot the guy in the back of the car and you wish you weren’t laughing, but this is slower, silent and more inexplicably sad and doom ridden. I always go back to his work, there’s something awfully familiar and uncanny in it… perfect to enjoy on a summery Sunday!
