network imbalance? soliciting advice!

by Risa Dickens

the indyish network is supposed to grow in a sustainable way. that’s what we want- that’s our plan. the site is still self-funded, with still just me and Elran working on it (interns and friends help do marketing and event stuff, and some blog posts, but we do all the websiting ourselves.) So we’ve been intentionally focused on Montreal artists, at first, and on growing through the extensions of our social network, and extending further to those brave souls who independently seek us out. This has meant that we’re not out there going after a new musician, a new publication, a new artist in a well-rounded way everyday. Because we’re slightly more sprouty and organic then that, we have what might be percieved as imbalance- lots more clothing artists then other kinds, so far, for example.

This kind of imbalance doesn’t bother me too much- because I think artists often can’t help but try their hand at other media, and are often surprising and succesful when they do. I can’t wait to see the co-authors who are already present crossing over - magazine editors making music, and visual art; guitarists making mittens and scarves; clothing designers and painters forming bands, etc. The kernels of this are already present- eg: Tyler from Telefauna will be posting his brilliant show posters up for sale under his anagramatic pseudonym soon- But short of me individually harassing folks into creative multi-tasking, this process will naturally take time.

So I’m trying to go forward carefully and I’d like advice. (from indyish artists and from readers who have an opinion). We have way more clothing then music. And the Art category is inflated bc it includes jewelery.

I want to balance these edges out, but on the other hand I’m happy that we’ve become a place that is welcoming to independent designers. I don’t want to start saying no to talented people who make clothes I want to wear…but on the other hand.. Gah! Any thoughts?
