Last night’s show at L’Escogriffe was really fun, even though not that many people showed up. We played what we think was our best set yet. We’ve been experimenting with a few new instrument setups, and we think that bass, guitar and drums with no kick drum is starting to work for us.
It was also our friend Mitz’s champagne birthday, so we dedicated a ballad to him and were pleased when he took that as an opportunity to perform an interpretive dance at the front of the stage.
Milie Croche played first. We’ve been excited to see her perform since we first listened to her myspace a few weeks ago. She plays anti-folk (think: Kimya Dawson from the Moldy Peaches), with a French pop influence (as a French Montrealer singing in English). Her guitar playing softly oompas underneath her easy singing. She’s crude and girly. Her lyrics cut and refuse to rhyme and run on after they’re finished and then just end. We picked up a copy of her 16 song CD, 1001 Breakup Songs, which comes in a ziplock case with a homemade sticker inside. The CD has a lo-fi quality and adds perfectly fun percussion to her live setup of guitar and vocals. Check out her music and order CDs on her myspace page. Her album release is on April 1st and she’s playing a bunch of shows before and after that (including one with Charlotte Cornfield, and a free show at Drawn and Quarterly) so check the dates on her page.
Coulees played last and although they had some technical issues with pedals they sounded really good in the space. They play fuzzy pop rock and their new songs are getting really really good.
The staff at L’Escogriffe were awesome. Rob, the sound guy, was super helpful and did great things for our instruments. It makes such a difference to have good sound!
