Malaria prevention concert Feb 28th

by alanah

Concordia University’s Amnesty International group has put together a tempting lineup for Thursday Feb 28th, with all proceeds going towards Malaria prevention in Africa. If the good deed alone won’t draw you out, check out the bands who have graciously volunteered to perform at the benefit:

- Milton Dawes: One of the seven drummers who started the “tam-tam” on the mountain.

- Andy Murphy: http://www.myspace.com/andymurphyplease

- Amos Joannides: www.myspace.com/amosjoannides

- Heruba: www.myspace.com/heruba

- Charlotte Cornfield and the Talls: www.myspace.com/charlottecornfield

+ a live DJ from 12-3am (Independent and 80s dance music)

I’ve been bumping into opening act, Andy Murphy, all over town lately. The affable, puppy-eyed East-coaster recently tripped into Montreal, via Calgary, bringing along a collection of tunes with tales to tell. He’s found a sweet little niche jamming with Ben Griffin and Matt Antaya at Olde Orchard’s Wednesday Singer Songwriter night and I’m eager to hear his solo stuff on Thursday.

Amos Joannides is an about-town soul-music man whom friends have been hounding me to check out for some time. And headliner Charlotte Cornfield won me over at first listen with her fresh, plucky songs. The 19-year-old singer-songwriter was a highlight of Indyish’s January Monthly Mess. Her album It’s Like That Here manages to capture both the free-spirited energy of being on the road and pay tribute to local landmarks.

Finally all proceeds are being donated to the Canadian-based Buy-a-Net foundation. Malaria prevention meds are pricey (thanks to pharmaceutical patents) and they can have intense side effects. Bug nets are cheap - 6$ can buy a net that protects a family of four – and offer long-lasting protection against mosquitoes, which transmit the disease. Buy-a-Net provides protective nets impregnated with mosquito repellent to entire communities in Africa, preventing the spread of Malaria one village at a time.

It’s local, straightforward, and effective. You know, like making the world a better place.
