A FESTIVAL of 60 SECOND FILMS. On September 24 and 25, La Sala Rossa will screen M60, the inaugural Montreal 60 Second Film Festival. More than 70 filmmakers from across the city, of every level of experience and expertise, will have their 60 second films shown in a rapidfire festival of vim, verve and joie de vivre. The festival includes everyone from first time filmmakers to Oscar winners, amateur documentarians to professional animators, not to mention puppets, witches, ice-cream and kittens.
At both screenings we will show the complete run of 60-second films. A closing party will take place after the September 25 screening.
M60 is a nonprofit community film festival like no other. There is no prizes, no submission fees, and no jury – nothing except the joy of filmmaking and film watching. Filmmakers were accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, flocking to our opening gala on July 24. The demand to participate was so high that organisers were forced to rename the festival, from the Montreal 60 Minute Film Festival to the Montreal 60 Second Film Festival, reflecting that there are more than 60 participating filmmakers.
Filmmakers had until the end of August to complete their films, following which all 70+ movies have been sequenced for pacing, rhythm and boom by the M60 organisers.
Esteemed contributors include Oscar-winning animator John Weldon, beloved musician Anna McGarrigle, director Robert Ditchburn (Assistant Director for 300, The Fountain, and more), and filmmakers from local production companies such as Automatic Vaudeville, Loaded Pictures and Binocular Films. There is also the lunatic energy of our amateur filmmakers - be it Caroline Blais’ bricolage animation of Gérald Tremblay’s cat, Anna Berlyn’s sincere love of Mount Royal, or Dan Beirne’s nightmare puppet show.
Sixty seconds is enough time for a disaster or - simply, - a masterpiece.
