M for Montreal: Krief, Shapes and Sizes, Hot Springs, Karkwa, The Stills, Creature and Thunderheist

by Marilis Cardinal

When Shapes and Sizes played last night, they made a joke about how, since the vast majority of the audience at the M For Montreal showcase last night consisted of industry folks, instead of hearing some clapping between songs, they would hear the sound of pen on paper. Now I wish I had written some notes down to make a coherent blog post, but consider the fact that I saw 8 bands, in two different rooms inside the Just For Laughs building and stuck around for the after-party and made it home very early this morning, the whole night is a bit blur. Thankfully, I have some photographic proof that I actually attended and that’s what I’ll be sharing with you seeing as none of the Indyish writers who would have something smart to say were able to join me. My picks for the night were Shapes and Sizes, a very cute band who’s female lead looks like she’d be called Betty or Sue Ann and of course, Thunderheist, who had me wondering if all these important music and media people would stop being so damn serious and dance a little bit. In the end, some friends of mine who had joined later in the evening, thefriendattack’s Laura and I were pretty much the only one’s dancing along to the infectious beats and that left Thunderheist’s Isis no choice but to jump off the stage and come join us.

there’s a black stain on my camera that I can’t remove! It’s there all the time, so annoying!
