I dig this DJ collective Loose Joints, recently sent my way by Burlesque star and collage artist Mel Garcia. I like their sound and I like their writing on their websites - their collective feels unpretentious and interesting and smart about disco. Here’s one of the lads on the subject of Italo in a recent Hour article:
“I’ve heard Italo used to describe everything from Canadian disco to techno,” Dave explains, “but to me it really belongs to an era in the late ’70s and early ’80s… European artists were being heavily influenced by disco from NYC and Philadelphia, but without the crazy budgets being paid by U.S. labels for orchestras and studio musicians, they had to employ a lot more electronic instruments and English-mangling vocalists. Pair that up with lyrics and artwork about robots and outer space and you’re mostly there… Some of the tracks went a long way to influence the birth of house music. That being said, like most dance genres, about 85 per cent of it is unlistenable shit, but that’s where record hunting comes in.” The Hour (January 18th 2007) Steve Lala
And here’s one of their most recent mixes, care of Dave Laheteenmaa:
And here’s this note from friendly Loose Joints on the subject of their upcoming party at the renovated masion, Le Social:
The words “raging disco bender” are thrown around a lot these days, but here at LOOSE JOINTS we take them very seriously - especially after last week, when a bus-load of paralegal secretaries showed up at our door and forced us to aurally pleasure them until five in the morning. Talk about taking one for the team…
The shenanigans continue this Friday as LOOSE JOINTS moves back upstairs to the newly renovated second floor of LE SOCIAL (1445 Bishop, MTL) where there’s ample room to get your freak on. Oh, and the sound has been recalibrated to PERFECTION. Pair that with all the new records we’ve been buying lately, and you have the best night out since Prohibition-era Chicago.
Things get underway this week at 9pm - the first ten people through the door get a free mix CD, and possibly some tongue action!
