Life Drawing, if burlesque is your life

by Tessa Smith

[Correction: Molly Crabapple started Dr. Sketchy in New York, and the Montreal series, which is run by Fanie Grégoire has been taking place since September 2007! Visit the blog to stay abreast of all things Sketchy]

I’ve been looking for life drawing classes in my neighbourhood. There are plenty downtown near the universities, but, well I’m lazy. I’m sure there’s something at the Y too. But this seems way more fun.

Check out Dr. Sketchy’s School of Anti-Art. On May 24th, artist Molly Crabapple held the first Montreal version of the now year-established New York series of life drawing sessions with burlesque models.

The sessions take place monthly at Mainline Theatre (3997 St-Laurent) and cost $10 to attend. All skill levels are welcome, beginner to expert, young and old.

The next class is Monday, June 16th, from 6pm to 9pm and it’s outside (!!) during the Fringe Festival @ Parc des Amériques (Corner St-Laurent and Rachel). For the occasion, Dr. Sketchy will be FREE! (or by donation).

Dr. Sketchy is a life-drawing class but with interesting models! Burlesque girls, dancers and others will follow. Instead of drawing in a boring class, artists will get to draw their pretty models!

All dry mediums, ink pens and watercolor sets are ACCEPTED. Oil paint, acrylic paint and all messy mediums are REFUSED.

We have chairs and a limited number of tables. It’s best to bring a good sketchpad. You can also bring your own small table or easel if you want to. For the LAPTOPS, it is best to bring your own small table or get in early to make sure you have one.
