With all the Fringe madness, I completely forgot to mention that L’Ecole Nationale de Cirque is currently having its year-end show and the last representation is… today! I got to see the premiere last week where there were a few minor mishaps, but it’s evident that the students at the school are talented and have worked really hard to put this show together. The only drawback is that every of the 30 or so students gets their 5 minutes in the spotlight, which is admirable, but it also means that the shows (because there’s actually two back-to-back) last for about 2 and a half hours. It’s a rather long time for any circus performance. On the upside, in the opening work by choreographer Catherine Tardif, Glam, the heroes of the show are a bunch of drag queens. If you ask me, it’s about time we introduced drag queens in works meant for the whole family. Now that I’m thinking about it, there’s also some swearing and violence in both shows. The second one, La Disparition, is directed by Estelle Clareton.
L’Ecole National du Cirque’s year-end show plays today at 2pm at La Tohu, 2345 Jarry East (at the corner of d’Iberville). Tickets are 15-25$.
