Are you, like Alanah, looking for a way to exert joyful earthy energy? This weekend do it here in the Mile End, Montreal neighborhood while making an eerily apt symbolic claim for a public garden.
large-scale garden project // take back green space !! // friday 23+saturday 24// 2007
This is a call out for some hands and feet to help me do a large-scale outdoor land art project. It will involve arranging leaves, earth, hay and cardboard in a large symbol upon a field of CN land by the train tracks in the Mile End. It will take place this Friday and Saturday (November 23 and 24) from 1 pm until dusk. Come when you can, stay if you like. Food will be provided.
I was just informed that the Arrondissement du Plateau has decided to develop this area into a monster parking lot, the work for which is said to begin in the spring. As there are no guarantees on the demolition, my intention is to create a large symbolic garden who’s life will remain indefinite, depending on the will of city administration.
I’m looking to lighten my load of work…with 10 people on it at once, things will go quickly and easily. It will be heart-warming to see people come out, so I hope you can make it!
PS:
* Wear warm clothes and work gloves if you have them.
* Bring leaves and cardboard if you can.
WHAT:
Working bee gathering community participants to assemble a large-scale land sculpture using mulch in the form of the Roerich symbol.
WHEN:
Friday November 23rd: 1 pm until 4pm
Saturday November 24th: 1 pm until 4pm
WHY:
The symbol literally means ‘Don’t Bomb Here’ and is a sign of cultural preservation. It was used in WWII to protect historical, religious and cultural monuments. The mulch will prepare and fertilize the soil for plants in the spring.
WHERE:
* Follow this link: directions to wild field garden
* The abandoned field of weeds south of the Mile End train tracks.
* Near the corner of St-Viateur and De Gaspe (the field is sandwiched between Henri-Julien and De Gaspe).
* From downtown, take the St Laurent # 55 north or Parc # 80 north and get off at St- Viateur. Walk east until de Gaspe. Walk south from St-Viateur until the chain link fence on the left.
* Beyond this fence is the field, in the centre of which is a cluster of trees. Here you will find 5 tons of earth/compost, cardboard, leaves, and hay. It can’t be missed!
