La TRAC tackles the unbearable coolness of Kundera

by sarah pearson

Anyone ever read any Milan Kundera? I recall reading the Czec-born writer’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” - a masterpiece of Modern lit - whilst in the Czec Republic. His writing is delightfully accessible, yet gratifyingly philosophical. He’s Emo-Existentialism meets Good Old Storytelling.

Silly me, I didn’t even know he wrote plays. But he did. Because Montreal’s French-speaking theatre troupe La TRAC is mounting Kundera’s comedy “Jacques et son Maître” this weekend and next.

Based on the press-material I read, this story seems to be as full of love, laughter, Big-Life questions and Charlie-Kaufmanesque trippy-witticisms as any of Kundera’s novels. At least, of the one I read. This fine novelist has an imagination that should translate brilliantly to stage-writing.

Here’s what the folks at la TRAC have to say about it:

Seemed that many a joke was cracked at Montreal Fringe’s The Thirteenth Hour about how Montreal’s French and English theatre peeps should just effin’ come together and make friends. To that, I say Darned Straight.

Jacques et Son Maître plays at the Monument National, 1182 St.Laurent, Sept. 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 at 8:30pm.

I thought that play was so refreshing and so accessible. I just sat and simply enjoyed the show. It was funny, touching and unlike some plays where I usually leave commenting about the actors; this time I left commenting about….well, the actors but also alot about the script. The script is just candy to your ears. Poetic, funny and understandable, comprehensible french script. If you want to spend a good evening not too complicated but activates your IQ and EQ, you really have to go see this play! You really won’t regret it!
