Kinks Tribute! Interview with Producer-Promoter Joey Sicurella

On May 10th, 2008 at Les Saints here in Montreal a little bit of first-time-ever is coming at you with a Kinks tribute. Local kooky sweetheart producer Joey Sicurella wrangled amazing bands to his cause, and then saw the excitement build around the show as he discovered that, far as anyone can tell, no one has EVER done a Kinks tribute in North America! Plain crazy. Lucky for us, the intense indie of the Kinks made him think of us at Indyish, and he schemed us involved in a few logical and some true to character kooky ways.. more on that as/if it develops, for now, check out this interview with Joey.

By the way, we sent these questions to him and to each of the bands involved, so watch for Kinky insights coming from The Besnard Lakes, Sunday Sinners, Bionic, Chocolat, and more over the coming days..

-So Joey! Why are YOU doing a Kinks tribute?

SO many great songs and nobody has done it in North America, The Kinks were the original indie rock band.

-What period or practices of the Kinks inspire you most? Big leather capes Kinks, or?

In one of the first “short film - music video” ever! The Kinks got dressed up as undertakers for the song “Dead End Street”. The press said they did it in bad taste. They were bad asses in their day. Bad asses inspire.

-Why play covers? Why do you think covers are so popular at shows? If the Kinks could cover one of your songs, which one would you have them cover?

Covers are popular because these are the songs we grew up on and never had the chance to see live. I don’t have a band, but i would love to see Ray/Dave Davies sing with World Provider and or Tony Ezzy. The four of them are intergalactic brothers.

-What sort of kinks does your band have?

I have a terrible kink in my neck. Mainly when i am stressed… Like if a show i am promoting may not be attended well. Or if a show is gonna be so fricken awesome i can’t wait for it to go down… Much like this Kink night! I may be disabled by show time…

-If you could take the Kinks out on the town for one night in Mtl…?

The after party for the kink night on Scott’s roof! We will be inviting ray davies to the show, maybe he will come to both!

-If the Kinks hadn’t been banned from the US for 4 years in the ’60s how would the world be different?

This Kinks tribute night may have already happened ten times over and we/i wouldn’t be answering these questions. Maybe there would be a band called The Kinkers touring the world with lazer shows’n’shit.
