Kaya Fraser at Zeke’s Gallery, Percy Farm and the Ideal Lovers at Lambi

by Risa Dickens

Alright, I missed this Zeke’s show, unfortunate but true… I was running slow and wonky, had a friend in town from Quebec city, and the Percy Farm record launch to attend, so I missed like 6 of the things I was supposed to run spinning to, including Kaya Fraser and Alex Krakaus at Zeke’s. bugger. But! Zeke’s is awesome at the podcasting and sharing culture thing- everything that goes down there is recorded with the artist’s permission and posted within a very short while (like overnight) to the Internet archive, and Zeke’s blogger site.

So I’ve been listening to Kaya Fraser’s set all afternoon and loving her. She’s amazing, and I can’t wait to hear how she evolves as an artist. She needs to relax in the tween-song banter I think, because she’s hugely funny in a dry way and as she gets more comfortable we’ll be able to hear more of that.

Here’s the link to the whole show on the Internet Archive. And here’s Kaya’s set:

and her myspace.

I really enjoyed the Percy Farm record launch at Lambi, of course. The Percy Farm sound is rolling around and building into a sturdier pop thing with every show, and I love to hear Louis sing from behind the piano and Tara’s gorgeous soulful tones from behind the drums, and Dan with his scratch and standing on toes, and everyone pulling together. And I loved the opening band Ideal Lovers too; they were fantastic (though the stuff on the myspace sounds nothing like it.. also good, but yeah..it’s possible I like their covers better then their original material, maybe it’s just the nostalgia factor) - anyway, their 4 part harmonies and country heart-achy holler in the show sound like somthine that’s just plain good for you. Take some in live when you can like sweet summer medicine.
