Just for Laughs auditions at the Comedy Nest

by Marilis Cardinal

Seems I was not the only one that was lured in to the Comedy Nest by the mention of a free comedy show. I was foolish enough to not make reservations and was practically sent home when my name was not on the list, but with a smile and a curtsy, I scored two seats and a ”don’t do it again, little girl!” from the doorman. February being possibly the most depressing month of the year, the “let’s have fun” over-ruled the “let’s stay home in warmth” and the room was packed!

Joey EliasThe night’s M.C. Joey Elias, who seemingly has worked with pretty much every single comedian that night, played off the audience, picking on a man that worked for the unemployment offices, an Italian guy’s hand movements, and a pretty girl sitting in the front row.

Derek SeguinDerek Seguin used a broken english to explain how his parents raised him to be a perfect bilingual and how Canadians should stop complaining about local politicians and just look across the border. Andrew Searles compared women on some sex phone lines to Gollum and Chewbacca to a girl he had a date with.

Jocko Alston line dancesJocko Alston talked about getting older and the changes that occur and proved that the only difference between line dancing and ”ghetto dancing”, as he put it, is in the hands.

Steve Patterson was my personal favourite! Back from a trip in Europe, he explained the importance of letting people know you’re not American when you travel. Strangely hyper from jet lag, he reinvented radio love songs with much more believable lyrics. (Catch him at the Comedy Nest March 15th-17th.) Daryl Makk was scheduled to headline at the end of the week and joined the lineup last minute, catch him at the nest Saturday night!
