In.Sight- Do, but Don’t: How to live the spirit of DIY in a shared existence.

by Natalie Riviere

You can’t literally do everything yourself. Many recognized achievers attribute their success to the strength of their team. Balance and the concept of enough for everyone rules nature, yet in the concrete jungle it is every man for himself. ‘They’ say that if you want something done right, you need to do it yourself. ‘They’ also say there is power in numbers. What to do? Trust.

Indyish unites people interested in artistic freedom and yet you NEED others in order to be free, especially in a creative realm. The energy put into a project will influence the outcome. Problems can arise when people don’t show up to work with the same passion or skills you might apply. But when you can’t do it all yourself, and you don’t have a good understanding of something yourself, it’s hard to stay on top of someone else’s work. For example: if you don’t know how to go through the process of booking/advancing a show, then it’s hard to know if someone you hired is doing a good job. With so many varied opinions and ethics available to guide you along, how can you know what is right for you?

Developing a good relationship with your intuition can serve as a solid foundation for life. With awareness, you can learn to recognize the signs and symbols that will guide you towards reaching your goal. Any idea begins in one mind and is met by others. The creative process it starts with you, but never ends. Therefore the spirit of DIY starts with knowing yourself enough to stay in harmony with your artistic vision, and the path it requires to be actualized. Create the space and it will be filled, the right people will find their way to you in perfect time. Trust!
