How to Post Products

Products are written using the same steps as when writing a Post, plus a few extras…

Set Inventory and Shipping.
Set Price, Colours, Sizes.
Get your Product to Archive.

Set Inventory and Shipping.

Note: Inventory and Shipping Cost are required steps if you want to make your product available for purchase. Your item will appear as Unavailable until you have correctly entered your Shipping Cost and Inventory.

  1. Click in the Current Inventory field and set your inventory (i.e., 10).
  2. And/Or check off “available for pre-order”. If you chose “available for pre-order” then use the dropdown menu to set your pre-order limit.
  3. Pre-order limit means you have no set inventory but can make these on demand, up to a point. You need to set a limit for this feature to work.

    Set Shipping destinations and costs

  4. Choose Canada, or Canada and the US, or International by filling out shipping costs in the appropriate boxes.
  5. For each shipping destination, enter the average amount it costs you to ship 1 item. Do put the decimal point, don’t put the dollar sign.

  6. indyish how tos- shipping destinations

Tip: According to one seller, his average shipping price to send a package of clothing to the US is about $12.00. If you’re shipping a cd or lightweight magazine though, you’ll only need to pay the price of a stamp. There can be a really wide range, which is why it’s up to you.

  7. This area is also where you’ll find the options to let your customers know if an item is currently or permanently unavailable.

Set Price, Colours, Sizes.

  1. Set your Price in Canadian Dollars and enter it in the field called Price. Don’t put the dollar sign, do put the decimal point.

Tip: There are lots of currency converters online. Here’s one from Yahoo.

  2. Sizes and Colours work the same way. Just enter each of your options separated by a comma. This will generate a drop down menu for your customers to choose from.

Get Your Product to Archive or: Optional Excerpt is NOT Optional for Products.

Yes, you need to put your post in the Product category, but there’s another for-now-crucial step to getting your posts to appear in the archives. On the Archive pages (artist archives, or Music, Clothing, Art, Literature) customers can browse through products and see preview images. If you don’t put an image in the Optional Excerpt field when making your post, you won’t get a preview image. Instead, these areas will show Description text. Not so nice. So here are the steps.

  1. On the Write Post page scroll down. Past the upload image area, before you get to the Custom Fields, you’ll see the Optional Excerpt field.
  2. screenshot of the optional excerpt field

  3. Click on the plus sign to open the field. When you’ve done this you’ll be looking at an empty box. (ooooh).
  4. This empty box (the optional excerpt field) is where you need to paste the code to display your image for the preview. Assuming you have already added pictures to your post, this step is very easy. Pick the photo you want to appear as the preview. Copy the image code that appeared in the main text box when you sent your picture to the editor (remember? when we were uploading pictures?). Paste it in this empty box.
  5. Optional excerpt with code

Note: You can use the exact same photo code here as above. Cut and Paste and everyone wins. Remember to Save.
